Helium-3 Transport and Logistics

Moving helium-3 from breeder to burner means transporting a scarce, inert gas in leak-tight vessels, where the priority is preventing loss.

Shipping a scarce gas

Helium-3 produced at the breeder must reach the installations that burn it. Transport is straightforward in principle — helium-3 is inert and non-radioactive, so it poses no radiological shipping hazard — but exacting in practice, because it is scarce and irreplaceable on a short timescale. The transported form is compressed or cryogenic gas in double-contained, leak-tight vessels, tracked as part of the fuel-accountancy ledger from the moment it leaves store.

Loss control end to end

Because a leak is a permanent supply loss, transport hardware mirrors storage hardware: double containment, helium-specific leak detection, and monitored transfer at both ends. Chain-of-custody accounting means the same gram of helium-3 is on the books at the breeder store, in transit, and at the burner store, with reconciliations at each handoff. Co-locating breeders and burners within a jurisdiction shortens the logistics chain and strengthens supply security.

Transport is the physical link that turns the breeder's output into the burner's input, and it is governed by the same loss-prevention and accountancy discipline that runs through the whole helium-3 supply.
