The Lunar Helium-3 Dependency

Beyond a breeder fleet, lunar helium-3 is the only known reservoir at fleet scale; it is a multi-decade dependency, stated as such.

When the Moon enters the plan

Breeder-bred helium-3 covers the test burner and early commercial units. Once burner fleets scale beyond what a breeder fleet can feed, the only known reservoir large enough is lunar regolith. This is a long-horizon dependency — recovery, processing, and return logistics are all unproven — and we do not present it as near-term.

Why it is credible as a reservoir but not as a schedule

The Moon holds helium-3 in quantities relevant to a large fusion fleet; that is a geological fact. What is unproven is the ability to recover it at rate and return it economically at fleet scale. We therefore treat lunar helium-3 as a strategic reservoir enabling long-term scale, not as a dated milestone.

The near-term takeaway

Nothing before a commercial burner depends on lunar helium-3. Its role is to answer “what feeds a large fleet?”, and that honest framing keeps the near-term plan grounded in breeder output.

The distinction we hold to here is between a reservoir and a schedule. The Moon holding fusion-relevant helium-3 is a geological fact; recovering it at rate and returning it at fleet scale is unproven engineering. Treating lunar helium-3 as a strategic reservoir rather than a dated milestone keeps the near-term plan grounded in breeder output, where the first real kilograms come from.
