Emergency Power & Blackstart

Backup power keeps safety systems alive through a loss of supply, and a blackstart path restores the plant without an external grid.

Loss of normal electrical supply must never compromise safety, and a sovereign installation must be able to recover on its own. Emergency power keeps safety-relevant loads running through an outage, and a blackstart capability restores the plant from a dead condition without relying on an external grid.

Backing safety loads

Ride-through and safe state

On loss of supply, uninterruptible power carries critical loads for the seconds it takes standby generation to pick up. If a fault also affects the machine, protection drives it to a safe state — plasma off, magnets discharged if required — while cooling continues on backup power to remove residual heat.

Blackstart

Because Aegis targets resilient, sovereign power, it is designed to restart from a de-energized state using its own resources, then supply an islanded load. Emergency-power and blackstart capabilities are engineered at design stage against the frozen machine and demonstrated in commissioning.
