Cooling Water Systems
Closed and auxiliary cooling loops carry heat from shielding, current leads, and equipment to the heat-rejection system.
Cooling-water systems are the intermediate loops between heat sources and final rejection. A closed primary loop serves the components that see radiation — chiefly the shield — and is kept isolated to control activation of the coolant and to contain any contamination. Secondary loops serve conventional equipment.
Loop separation
Loops are separated so that any activated or potentially contaminated coolant stays within a closed, monitored circuit and is not the same water that reaches the environment. Intermediate heat exchangers pass heat between loops without mixing fluids, a standard defense-in-depth practice.
Water quality and makeup
- Treatment controls corrosion, scaling, and biological growth
- Makeup replaces evaporative and blowdown losses
- Monitoring watches for activation, contamination, and leaks
- Inventory sized so short supply interruptions do not force a trip
Safety role
The shield-cooling loop removes heat that must keep flowing even after shutdown, because residual and decay heat persist. It is therefore treated as a supported system with backup power and, where practical, passive circulation margins. Cooling-water design follows the frozen machine's thermal loads and is a design-stage engineering package.
