Balance of Plant Overview

Balance of plant is every system around the reactor core that supplies it, converts its output, and keeps it safe and available.

The reactor core — plugs, central cell, throat, and DEC end — does not run alone. Balance of plant (BOP) is the surrounding set of systems that feed it, cool it, convert its output to usable power, and keep it monitored and safe. BOP typically dominates plant part count and much of the operations workload.

Design emphasis

Because the burner emphasizes direct energy conversion and a low neutron fraction (5.44%), its BOP differs from a conventional thermal plant: less emphasis on a large steam cycle, more on cryogenics, vacuum, power electronics, and radiological handling of the neutron byproduct. BOP is engineered at design stage against the frozen machine.
