Technology Readiness Levels

On a nine-level readiness scale, MetroVolt’s design and validated simulation place it near TRL 3–4, with the test unit targeting TRL 6–7.

A common yardstick

Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 1–9) are a widely used maturity scale, from basic principles (TRL 1) through validated components (TRL 4–5), integrated demonstration (TRL 6–7), to a proven operational system (TRL 8–9). Applying it to MetroVolt keeps claims proportionate.

Where MetroVolt sits

A specified design point with reproducible simulation and analytical validation is consistent with TRL 3–4: the concept is formulated and key parameters are validated in models, but not in an integrated environment. The ~2032 test unit is designed to advance the burner core toward TRL 6–7 by demonstrating an integrated machine in a relevant environment.

TRL is a coarse instrument and different subsystems sit at different levels — magnets and cryogenics benefit from breeder work, while tandem-mirror confinement and direct energy conversion are less mature. The gate pages give the subsystem-specific picture.
