Materials Qualification Path
First-wall and structural materials must be qualified for the burner’s neutron and heat loads — eased by D-³He, not eliminated.
What qualification demands
Qualifying a material for a fusion machine means showing it survives the expected neutron fluence, heat flux, and chemical environment for a useful service life, with predictable degradation and activation. For MetroVolt the neutron load is modest — a fraction near 5.44% — but heat flux on DEC-facing and plasma-facing surfaces is still demanding.
The path
Qualification proceeds from existing material databases and breeder-program data, through models of damage and activation, to exposure on the ~2032 test unit that confirms predicted life. The lower neutron fraction shortens the path relative to a D-T machine, but a demonstrated service life still requires test-unit hours.
