Licensing a new kind of machine
Any power-producing fusion machine must be licensed to operate, and one sited near data centers or cities faces particular scrutiny. Fusion’s regulatory framework is still maturing, which makes early, honest engagement with regulators part of readiness rather than an afterthought.
Kronos approaches this through pre-application engagement, working within a byproduct-material framework appropriate to fusion devices rather than fission licensing designed for a different technology. This is early-stage: the burner is a design, and licensing follows the machine’s maturity.
Honest positioning
No MetroVolt unit is licensed, and no site approval exists. The framework favors fusion’s lower hazard profile relative to fission, but a specific approval is earned through a documented safety case and site review, not assumed from a favorable framework.
