The first real plasma
First plasma is when the burner test unit first confines a plasma in its tandem-mirror configuration. It is a genuine milestone: the machine exists, the magnets energize, and the plasma forms. But it is the start of the measurement campaign, not a demonstration of firm power.
At first plasma the machine is characterized — field profiles, plasma formation, basic confinement — against the design predictions. Discrepancies here are expected and valuable; they calibrate the models before the harder confinement and burn tests.
What it does and does not show
- Shows: the machine operates and forms a plasma as configured.
- Shows: first data on fields and formation vs prediction.
- Does not show: sustained burn, net electric output, or firmness.
