Layout choices - perimeter control, stand-off distance, and unit separation - protect Aegis units and their auxiliaries from external threats.
Security by layout
Much of a plant's physical security is decided by where things sit. Stand-off distance from the perimeter reduces the effect of an external event; controlled access and separation between units limit how far a single incident can propagate; and hardened placement of auxiliaries keeps a peripheral hit from cascading into a full loss of generation.
Concentric protection
Security is arranged in layers: the installation perimeter, a controlled zone around the power block with setback, and the hardened core containing the units and their critical auxiliaries. Each layer buys time and distance. Redundant units are placed so that the layers protect them independently, preserving the N+1 margin under attack.

Low signature aids security
A low-signature plant is a harder target to find and characterise, which complements physical measures. The absence of a combustion plume or hot stack removes obvious cues, and modest acoustic output reduces detectability.

The layered layout also buys response time: because no single external event can reach the hardened core directly, operators and protective systems have the interval created by setback and separation to isolate a fault before it spreads.
