Energy Poverty and Fusion's Long Bet

Roughly hundreds of millions of people still lack reliable electricity; fusion is a long-horizon bet, not a near-term answer to that gap.

The gap that persists

Energy poverty is not only the absence of a grid connection. It includes unreliable supply, unaffordable operation, and dependence on burning wood, dung, charcoal, or kerosene indoors — which harms lungs, especially of women and children. The nearest-term remedies are practical and known: distributed solar, better grids, cleaner cooking. Fusion does not compete with those and should not be sold as if it did.

We say this directly because overpromising on fusion would do harm. The machines are design and simulation studies; the earliest milestone is first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium around 2030, with commercial-scale contribution far beyond that. Anyone who needs power this decade needs the technologies that exist this decade.
