Helium-3 and Quantum Futures
Helium-3 is scarce and strategically valuable for cryogenics and quantum technology; the breeder is studied to produce it.
A scarce isotope with real uses
Helium-3 is rare on Earth and valued for uses that have nothing to do with power generation: ultra-low-temperature cryogenics, certain detectors, and cooling for quantum computing hardware. Its scarcity constrains fields that depend on it. The breeder (Hyperion) is studied to produce about 1.97 kg/yr of helium-3 alongside its tritium class output.
We are careful about how we frame this. Helium-3's strategic value is not a revenue claim — economics are outside this account — but a statement that a scarce, useful isotope could become less scarce. That serves researchers and technologies that are currently supply-limited.
The tie to the burner's fuel gate
There is a second reason helium-3 matters. The burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) runs on D-3He and faces a hard fuel gate: a commercial unit's helium-3 demand is on the order of 400 times domestic supply. That is precisely why breeder-bred helium-3, and eventually lunar helium-3, are part of the long-term picture. We state the gate plainly rather than assuming the fuel exists.
