Resilience as a human value
As extreme weather grows more common, the ability to keep essential services running through disruption becomes a matter of safety. Hospitals, water systems, shelters, and communications need power that does not fail when the weather turns. A firm, weather-independent source sited near demand contributes directly to that resilience.
Fusion is studied for exactly this firm role. The breeder (Hyperion) and burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) are steady sources by design, not dependent on wind or sun in the moment. If they reach useful operation, they could anchor the resilient core of a local energy system, complementing renewables that carry the bulk of clean generation.
The honest caveats

- The burner's modeled availability (0.86-0.995) is below hyperscale Tier III (0.99982)
- Resilience also depends on grid design, storage, and planning beyond any single source
