Lunar helium-3 links fusion to spaceflight; we treat that link as a long-horizon possibility, stated with restraint.
Where fusion and space meet
The burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) runs on D-3He, and helium-3 is scarce on Earth but thought to be more available in lunar regolith. This creates a genuine link between fusion energy and a space-faring future: a mature D-3He economy would benefit from off-world helium-3. It is one of the more speculative parts of the mission, and we mark it as such.
The honest chain of dependencies is long. The burner faces a fuel gate — helium-3 demand on the order of 400 times domestic supply per commercial unit — which is why bred and lunar sources are discussed at all. But lunar extraction at scale does not exist, and we do not assume it. This is a possibility we name, not a plan we rely on.
Restraint about a grand idea
- Lunar helium-3 mining is not demonstrated at any relevant scale
- The burner itself is a design and simulation study with open gates
- Breeder-bred helium-3 (~1.97 kg/yr modeled) is the nearer, terrestrial route
