Powering an Advanced Society Cleanly

An advanced society's appetite for energy keeps growing; the question is whether that growth can be met without combustion.

Demand is not going away

Computation, electrified transport, industrial heat, water treatment, and rising living standards all pull energy demand upward. Efficiency helps but does not reverse the trend. An honest account of the future assumes society will want more usable energy, not less — which makes the cleanliness of that energy the decisive question.

Fusion is attractive here because its cleanliness is structural: no carbon combustion, fuel that is abundant, and no long-lived actinide waste stream. The breeder (Hyperion) and burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) are studied as steady sources for exactly the demand that is hardest to serve cleanly — dense, continuous, sited near load, such as the MetroVolt data-center housing.

The honest counterweight

Cleanliness in principle is not performance in practice. The burner faces a real availability gate: modeled availability of roughly 0.86 to 0.995 against hyperscale Tier III's 0.99982 — a 30-to-100-fold gap in downtime. That means the burner is not a sole Tier-III source today, and we say so rather than implying data centers can rely on it now.

So 'powering society cleanly' is a direction we are working toward under stated constraints, not a capability we claim to have. See cooling and a warming world and letting the planet heal.
