The Energy Poverty Problem

Hundreds of millions lack reliable power; fusion's honest relationship to that problem is indirect and long-term.

The scale of the problem

A large share of the world's population lives with unreliable electricity or none at all. The consequences are concrete: refrigeration for medicine, lighting for study, power for clinics and water systems. Energy poverty is one of the most consequential inequities of the modern era, and any energy technology is fairly asked what it does about it.

The honest answer for fusion is: not much directly, and not soon. Fusion is capital-intensive, skill-intensive, and grid-scale. Its near-term deployment serves industrialized grids and large loads, not off-grid or weak-grid communities. The technologies most likely to reduce energy poverty in the next decade are distributed solar, storage, and grid extension — not fusion.

The indirect connection

We include this page precisely because it would be easy and dishonest to imply fusion answers energy poverty. It does not, in any near term. Its contribution, if any, is indirect: strengthening the systems and reducing the emissions that shape the context in which energy poverty is fought.

The honest caveat

Claiming a clean-energy mission while ignoring the people with the least energy would be a moral evasion. Claiming fusion solves their problem would be a factual one. We try to avoid both. See energy and human development and what fusion won't fix.
