What Fusion Won't Fix
A clean, firm power source is powerful and limited; naming what it cannot do is part of honest impact.
The limits of even a good answer
Suppose the physics closes and fusion becomes a mature source of firm clean power. It would still leave large problems untouched. Impact honesty means listing them as plainly as the benefits, because a technology sold as a cure-all breeds the disillusionment that follows every over-promise.
What fusion does not address
- Emissions from agriculture, land use, industrial process chemistry, and much of transport
- The transmission and distribution bottlenecks that constrain all generation
- Material and mineral demands of the broader transition
- Energy access for off-grid and weak-grid communities in the near term
- The political and institutional work of actually decarbonizing
Even in electricity, fusion is one firm-power candidate among several — advanced fission, geothermal, and long-duration storage among them. It does not replace renewables; it complements them. A grid does not run on any single source, and a decarbonized world will not either.
Why we say this
There is a recurring failure mode in energy: a promising technology is presented as the answer, funding and attention concentrate, the technology under-delivers against an inflated promise, and the backlash sets back the whole field. Naming limits is insurance against that pattern. Fusion is better served by accurate expectations than by inflated ones.
The honest frame
