Why Availability Matters For The Grid

For firm service, being available at the moment of need is everything; a resource's grid value collapses if it is down when called.

Availability is the currency of firmness

A firm resource is only as good as its availability. Capacity that is out of service at the peak provides no reliability. This is why availability, not nameplate or average energy, sets a resource's capacity credit and its contribution to reserve margins and N-1 planning. For a data center pursuing near-perfect uptime, the sensitivity is extreme.

The burner (MetroVolt) is designed to be firm, but its design-stage single-unit availability (0.86 to 0.995) trails the 0.99982 that a Tier III load requires. Understanding why this matters explains the whole redundancy strategy in this category.

From single unit to reliable service

Reliability engineering turns imperfect components into a reliable system through redundancy. Several units with independent failure modes, plus storage and a grid tie, deliver an effective availability far higher than any one unit. A data center already applies this principle to its own equipment; the burner fleet applies it to generation.
