Pairing Firm Generation With Storage
Batteries and a firm burner are complements: storage handles fast, short swings while firm generation carries sustained and multi-day load.
Division of labour
Storage and firm generation solve different problems. Batteries respond in milliseconds and are ideal for smoothing second-to-minute variability, providing fast frequency response, and shifting a few hours of energy. They are poorly suited to sustained output over days. Firm generation carries the sustained and multi-day load but responds more slowly than a battery.
Pairing the two gives a campus or microgrid the best of both: a battery covers the instant a fault occurs and the fast transients, while the burner (MetroVolt) provides the underlying firm energy. This pairing also eases the burner's ramp duty.
Why the pairing helps the gates
Storage can partially buffer the availability gate. If a burner unit trips, a co-sited battery can bridge seconds to minutes while a backup unit or the grid picks up load, softening the impact of the 0.86 to 0.995 availability against a 0.99982 Tier III expectation. Storage does not close the gate but it reduces the consequence of a single forced outage.
Honest framing
This is an architecture-level design argument. The burner is not built; the pairing is a way the design intends to reach data-center-grade continuity given the open availability gate.
