From Two To Many Firm Units

Scaling from a test unit to a firm fleet is a manufacturing and supply problem layered on top of the open physics gates.

The scale-up path

A single working unit is a physics demonstration; a firm grid resource is a fleet. Getting from one to many requires repeatable manufacturing, a qualified supply chain for high-field magnets and direct-conversion hardware, and enough fuel to run every unit continuously. Each of these is a distinct program beyond the first machine.

The burner (MetroVolt) roadmap moves from a test unit around 2032 to commercial units around 2036 and then to fleets that provide firm capacity at grid scale. Reliability is expected to improve as units accumulate operating hours and as manufacturing matures.

What must be true to scale

Fleet scale requires that the physics gates close on the test unit, that manufacturing can produce 26.49 T plug magnets and DEC trains repeatably, and that fuel exists. The last is the binding external constraint: He-3 demand at commercial scale is roughly 400 times domestic supply, which is why the breeder-bred and lunar He-3 pathways are part of the plan.

Honest framing

The scale-up is a plan, not an achievement. It is sequenced deliberately behind the breeder build and the test unit, and every step is contingent on the prior one. No firm fleet exists today.
