Maintenance And Scheduled Outages

Planned maintenance is part of every plant's availability budget; scheduling it around a fleet keeps firm output continuous.

Planned versus forced

Availability is reduced by two kinds of downtime: planned outages for inspection, component replacement, and refuelling, and forced outages from unexpected faults. Planned outages can be scheduled for low-demand periods and staggered across a fleet; forced outages cannot. Both must fit within the availability budget a firm resource commits to.

The burner (MetroVolt) will require maintenance on its magnets, first wall, vacuum and cryogenic systems, and the direct-conversion train. Designing for accessibility and for module replacement shortens planned outages and improves availability.

Design for maintainability

Availability is won or lost in maintainability. Components arranged for quick access, modular sub-systems that can be swapped rather than repaired in place, and diagnostics that catch problems before they force an outage all reduce downtime. These are explicit design goals for the burner.

Honest framing

Maintenance intervals and durations for a burner are not yet known, because no unit has operated. The availability estimate of 0.86 to 0.995 already attempts to include planned and forced outages, but it is a design-stage figure to be refined once units run.
