Islanding And Microgrids

Running as an island
Islanding is operating a local network, a campus, a district, a data center, disconnected from the main grid, supplied by local generation and storage. A microgrid is a network designed to do this intentionally: it can run connected to the grid or, when the grid fails, disconnect and keep its own load powered. Islanding requires a resource that can set voltage and frequency on its own.
A grid-forming burner (MetroVolt) sited at the load is well suited to anchor a microgrid. It supplies firm energy while inverter controls hold the island's voltage and frequency, and a co-sited battery covers the instant of disconnection and fast transients.
Why this matters for data centers and cities
A data center or a critical urban district that can island rides through wider grid disturbances without interruption. For compute loads that lose work on any outage, and for cities protecting critical services, the ability to island on a firm local source is a resilience asset distinct from raw energy supply.
Honest framing
Islanding is a design capability of a grid-forming firm unit. Its value for Tier III continuity is limited by the availability gate (0.86 to 0.995 vs 0.99982): a single islanded unit still needs redundancy and storage to approach data-center-grade continuity.
