Grid Firming Alongside Renewables
A firm, dispatchable burner is a complement to wind and solar, filling the hours and seasons when variable output falls short.
Not a competitor to renewables
On a decarbonizing grid, the cheapest energy increasingly comes from wind and solar, but their output is variable and occasionally absent for days. The role of a firm resource is to guarantee power in those hours without building storage for every rare multi-day lull. The burner (MetroVolt) is positioned as that firming partner, not as a replacement for renewables.
Because it is dispatchable, a burner can sit back when renewables are plentiful and ramp when they fade, improving the utilization of the whole system. Its firm capacity is what lets an operator retire fossil peakers while keeping resource adequacy.
What firming requires
To firm renewables well, a resource must be (1) reliably available at the peak, (2) able to ramp, and (3) sited where the grid needs it. MetroVolt's design targets all three, but each meets an open gate: availability (0.86 to 0.995 vs 0.99982 Tier III), unproven ramp under a plug regime far beyond experiment, and siting that still depends on interconnection approval.
Honest scope
This is a design-stage complementarity argument. No burner has firmed a real grid. The claim is that the architecture, low-neutron D-3He with direct conversion and near-zero water, is well matched to the firming role once the physics gates are closed after the ~2032 test unit.
