Reliability Through Redundant Fleets
A fleet of modular units operated together provides continuous firm output even as individual units cycle through maintenance and forced outages.
The fleet as the product
For grid and data-center service, the meaningful unit of reliability is not a single machine but a fleet. With several units, one can be down for planned maintenance and another for a forced outage while the rest carry the load. Staggering maintenance and holding a reserve unit keeps firm output continuous.
The burner (MetroVolt) fleet is designed this way. Modularity lets capacity be matched to load and lets units be maintained without dropping the campus. This is the practical route to the continuity a Tier III data center needs, given that no single unit reaches 0.99982 availability.
Scaling and its limit
Larger fleets give higher effective availability, up to the point where common-mode failures dominate. Beyond that, adding units yields little, so the design must eliminate shared failure paths, especially in fuel supply, controls, and cooling.
Honest framing
Fleet reliability is a design strategy, and building a fleet raises a separate gate: helium-3 demand for a commercial unit is roughly 400 times domestic supply, so a large fleet depends on breeder-bred and lunar He-3. Fleet firmness and fuel supply are linked, and both are design-stage.
