Seasonal And Multi-Day Lulls

Wind and solar droughts can last days or align with seasonal demand peaks; firm generation covers the gaps storage cannot economically span.

When storage runs out

Batteries excel at shifting energy across hours. They are poorly suited to a week of low wind in midwinter, because the stored energy required grows with the duration of the lull. These Dunkelflaute events, dark and windless spells, are rare but decisive for reliability planning. A grid must cover them or accept blackouts.

Firm generation, run continuously or dispatched through the lull, is the practical answer. The burner (MetroVolt) is designed to run steady-state indefinitely on stored D-3He fuel, independent of weather, which is the property a multi-day lull demands.

Fuel logistics

Because fusion fuel is energy-dense, a burner can hold long-duration firmness without a large fuel yard. But this is where the third honest gate bites: helium-3 demand for a commercial unit is roughly 400 times domestic supply. Multi-day firmness assumes a fuel supply that does not yet exist at terrestrial scale, which is why the breeder-bred He-3 pathway and lunar He-3 matter.

Honest summary: the architecture is well matched to seasonal firmness, but the fuel-supply gate must be closed before a fleet can deliver it.
