What We Will Not Claim

Honesty is defined as much by restraint as by assertion; here are the environmental claims we deliberately refuse to make.

The discipline of restraint

Environmental communication is full of claims that outrun the evidence. On this mission, honesty means naming what we will not say as clearly as what we will. These refusals are not hedging; they are the boundary that makes our positive claims worth trusting.

Claims we refuse to make

We also refuse to attach economics of any kind to environmental claims, and to present a single design number as if the design were settled when it is a studied range — as with the breeder's tritium breeding ratio across 1.1, 1.5, and 1.8.

what we claimwhat we won't

Keeping this list explicit and public is itself a commitment. It gives readers a fixed standard to hold us to and makes backsliding visible: if a future claim of ours crosses one of these lines, the crossing is on the record. Refusals stated in advance are harder to quietly abandon than good intentions kept only in mind.

This page is the backstop for every other environmental claim on the site. See humility about what we don't know and honest environmental accounting.
