Energy and the Biosphere

How a civilization gets its energy shapes the air, the land, the water, and the living systems that share the planet with it.

The coupling is physical

Every energy system draws on the biosphere and returns something to it: emissions to the air, heat to water and atmosphere, disturbance to land, and material demand to the crust. There is no zero-impact energy. The honest question is the shape and size of the footprint, and whether it fits within the planet's capacity to absorb it.

Four channels of impact

Fusion's structural advantages are in the air and materials channels: no combustion products, and fuels drawn from abundant sources. It is not free of land, water, or material demands, and we treat those honestly on their own pages — see land and footprint, water and fusion, and materials and the Earth.

The breeder and burner are being designed with these channels in view. Because the machines are not yet built, our footprint figures are engineering estimates tied to frozen designs, not measured plant data. We flag that distinction wherever numbers appear.
