A plant's footprint spans construction, operation, and retirement; we account for the whole life, not the flattering middle.
Cradle to grave, not cradle to switch-on
The temptation in clean-energy communication is to report only the clean operating phase and ignore the emissions and materials of building and retiring the plant. Lifecycle thinking rejects that. The honest footprint of any energy source spans mining and manufacturing, construction, operation, maintenance, and decommissioning.
The phases we account for
- Materials: mining, refining, and manufacturing of components
- Construction: energy and emissions to build the plant
- Operation: fuel cycle, water, and maintenance over the plant's life
- End of life: decommissioning and disposal or recycling of activated material
For fusion, the operating phase is structurally clean — no combustion, no high-level fuel waste. The honest work is in the other phases: embodied emissions of magnets and structure, and activated material at end of life. We treat these on activation and materials and decommissioning thinking.
The discipline cuts against a common failure mode in clean-energy claims, where the clean operating phase is advertised and the dirty construction phase is omitted. By insisting on the whole life, we make it harder to flatter ourselves, and we give reviewers a complete boundary to check rather than a curated slice designed to look good.
Because the machines are design studies, our lifecycle figures are estimates tied to frozen designs. We say so, per honest environmental accounting.
