The limit beyond carbon

Even a perfectly carbon-free energy source is not free of physical limits. By thermodynamics, essentially all energy humanity uses eventually degrades into waste heat delivered to the environment. Today this is a negligible effect beside greenhouse warming, but it is a real ceiling on how much energy a planet's surface can absorb without warming from the heat itself.

Why we name it

Naming this limit is a matter of intellectual honesty. It means that abundant clean energy is not a license for unbounded growth in energy use forever; it shifts the binding constraint from emissions to heat rejection at some far-off scale. Acknowledging that keeps the healed-Earth aspiration grounded rather than utopian.
