Handling a mobile, radioactive isotope
Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that emits low-energy beta particles and is chemically hydrogen — it permeates materials and mixes into water. It is not an external-radiation hazard through skin, but it must be contained to prevent inhalation or ingestion. Handling it draws on decades of established practice at tritium facilities worldwide.

Why it is central to the breeder
The breeder both breeds and burns tritium and produces a tritium-class product on the order of 4 kg/yr, so tritium handling is not a side system — it is core plant infrastructure. It also determines the helium-3 product, since helium-3 arises from tritium decay and must be captured. Handling readiness is therefore inseparable from the breeder's product case, and it is designed to established standards rather than improvised.
