FOAK, NOAK, and BOAK

Why the build sequence is structured so each unit retires risk for the next, and what that implies for readiness.

Learning is engineered into the sequence

Rather than promise a perfect first unit, the program is built around learning. FOAK (first-of-a-kind) is expected to be the hardest and most instrumented unit; NOAK (next-of-a-kind) applies the corrections FOAK reveals; BOAK (balance-of-kind) is the replicated fleet unit that benefits from a stabilized design and process.

What this means for a defense counterpart

No shortcutting the sequence

The temptation in any program is to skip ahead in the story — to describe FOAK with BOAK's confidence. Kronos does not. First tritium from FOAK, targeted for approximately 2030, is the event that starts this ladder, and each rung is claimed only when the corresponding unit earns it. This is also how manufacturing readiness matures: the fabrication route is proven on a first article before it is trusted at fleet volume.
