ICRP-based dose limits and the ALARA principle govern worker and public protection at the facility.
Keeping dose as low as reasonably achievable
Radiation protection at a fusion facility follows internationally accepted principles, based on recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) and implemented through national regulation. The governing idea is ALARA — keeping exposure As Low As Reasonably Achievable — layered on top of firm dose limits for workers and the public.
Sources at a fusion facility
- 14 MeV neutrons during operation, requiring shielding and access control.
- Activated structural materials, which decay after shutdown.
- Tritium, an internal-exposure concern managed by containment and monitoring.
- No fission products and no long-lived spent fuel of the fission kind.
Design-for-protection
Protection is engineered in: neutron shielding and biological shields, remote handling for activated components, ventilation and monitoring for tritium, and administrative controls on access during operation. A fusion facility's radiological profile is genuinely different from fission — the hazard is dominated by neutron activation and tritium rather than a large inventory of long-lived fission products — and the regulatory framework reflects that. Kronos states dose-management intent at the level of principle and design; it does not publish site-specific analyses in this public library.
Radiation-protection readiness is a licensing prerequisite and is treated as such from early design.
