What FOAK Will and Won't Prove
The first-of-a-kind breeder will settle some questions and leave others open; Kronos says in advance which is which.
Scoping the first machine honestly
The first-of-a-kind (FOAK) breeder (Hyperion) is the moment simulation meets steel. It is important to say in advance what it will and will not decide, so its results are read correctly rather than over- or under-interpreted when they arrive around 2030.
What FOAK is positioned to prove
- Whether the plasma reaches its design current and confinement in a real machine
- First measured tritium production — the product the breeder exists to make
- Behaviour of a physical blanket, giving a first real breeding-ratio measurement
- Integrated operation of magnets, heating, and control together
What FOAK will not prove
- Net-electric gain — that is not the breeder's purpose
- Long-term component lifetime under fluence — that needs sustained runtime
- NOAK and BOAK improvements — those are later machines
- The burner's physics — a separate device and a separate program
A first machine that is honestly scoped cannot 'disappoint' by failing to do things it was never meant to do. Setting expectations correctly now is how we make sure FOAK's real results are judged on their real merits.
