Direct Energy Conversion, Honestly

Direct energy conversion is a real advantage of the D-3He burner and a design goal, not a demonstrated result — Kronos states it as both.

A real principle, not yet a measured plant

Direct energy conversion captures the kinetic energy of charged fusion products as electricity without a thermal cycle. Because the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) runs D-3He with only a 5.44% neutron fraction, most of its energy is in charged particles that direct conversion can, in principle, capture efficiently. That is a genuine reason to pursue this fuel and geometry.

Why we separate the two

Direct energy conversion is compelling enough that it invites overstatement — describing an efficient charged-particle plant as if it exists. It does not. The physics motivation is strong and the engineering is unproven. Both statements are true at once, and we make both, so the reader neither dismisses the idea nor mistakes it for a finished machine.

The honest summary: the burner's fuel and conversion path are well-motivated design choices, and turning them into a net-electric machine remains ahead of us, behind gates we have named.
