The Internal Review Gate Before Publishing
Nothing goes public until it clears an internal gate: verification done, error budget stated, claims labelled, and the record reproducible.
A checklist that must pass
Before any number reaches the public, it passes an internal gate designed to catch what individual diligence misses. The gate is a checklist applied the same way every time, so quality does not depend on who happened to prepare the result or how rushed the week was.
What the gate requires
- Verification complete: convergence shown, tests passing, conservation closed.
- Error budget stated: uncertainties enumerated and propagated.
- Claims labelled: each number marked as verified simulation or validated measurement.
- Provenance intact: every figure traceable to inputs, code version, and freeze.
- Reproducible: the result re-runs from the archived environment.
- Gates surfaced: honest limitations stated, not buried.
The gate protects the reader
The point of the gate is that the reader inherits the checking. When we publish Q_sci 3.424 or the burner gates, the reader should be able to assume the internal work was done -- because it was, and because the record lets them confirm it. A gate that can be skipped under pressure is not a gate, so it is applied uniformly, including to inconvenient results and tight deadlines.
This internal gate is the private counterpart of peer review and open scrutiny. It is where we try hardest to find our own errors, precisely so that what reaches the public record is worthy of the trust we are asking for. Applied without exception, the gate is also a promise about pressure: that a tight deadline or an exciting result never becomes a reason to publish something that has not been checked the way everything else was.
