The Post-Combustion Era

The through-line of the vision is the end of burning things for energy — a civilizational shift as large as the one that started with fire.

Vision, not specification. This page describes a future that fusion could help make possible — not a product promise, forecast, or performance claim. The Kronos machines today are design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated; construction of the first breeder is planned to begin in Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind first tritium targeted around 2030.

Fire built us; fire also limits us

Controlled fire is arguably humanity’s oldest technology, and burning fuel has powered every advance since the industrial revolution. But combustion is also the root of the climate problem, of urban air pollution, and of much geopolitical conflict over fuel. The post-combustion era is the idea that we can keep the capability fire gave us while retiring the fire itself.

Fusion is not fire. It releases energy by combining light nuclei, not by oxidizing carbon, so it produces no carbon dioxide and no smoke. Together with renewables and electrification, it points toward an energy system where nothing needs to be burned to keep the lights on, the factories running, or the vehicles moving.

What ends, and what does not

Stated with discipline

This is a long-horizon, civilization-scale claim, and it is offered as a direction rather than a schedule. The machines are simulation studies; the transition is the work of decades and of many technologies together. Naming the destination is how the near-term engineering stays pointed the right way.
