Firm Power for a Renewable Grid
The hardest part of a clean grid is the last increment of reliability; firm fusion is designed to supply exactly that.
Vision, not specification. This page describes a future that fusion could help make possible — not a product promise, forecast, or performance claim. The Kronos machines today are design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated; construction of the first breeder is planned to begin in Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind first tritium targeted around 2030.
The reliability tail
Getting a grid to a high share of clean energy is increasingly routine. Getting it to a fully clean, always-on grid runs into a stubborn tail: the small fraction of hours each year when demand is high and wind and solar are both low. That tail is disproportionately expensive to cover with variable sources and storage, and it is where fossil plants tend to survive.
Firm clean generation is the natural tool for the tail. Because it runs on demand rather than on weather, a relatively modest firm fleet can retire a much larger standby fossil fleet. The vision is a grid whose last dirty megawatt-hours are finally displaced.
Density and siting
Firm generation is also compact. A plant that produces steady output from a small footprint can sit near load — a city, a port, a cluster of data centers — reducing the need for long new transmission lines across contested landscapes. The burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) is conceived for exactly this kind of sited, on-demand role.

Caveats
- The tail-filling role is a design intent, not a proven capability today.
- First breeder construction is planned for Q2 2027; burner testing is later.
- Renewables plus storage still do most of the work; firm power closes the gap.
