Restoring the Carbon Balance

Cutting emissions to zero stops the problem growing; abundant clean energy is what makes pulling legacy carbon back out affordable in energy terms.

Vision, not specification. This page describes a future that fusion could help make possible — not a product promise, forecast, or performance claim. The Kronos machines today are design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated; construction of the first breeder is planned to begin in Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind first tritium targeted around 2030.

Two tasks, not one

Stabilizing the climate involves two separate tasks. The first is stopping new emissions — the decarbonization already underway. The second is drawing down the carbon already in the atmosphere from a century of burning. The second task is often left out because it is energy-intensive: capturing dilute carbon dioxide from the air and fixing it takes real power.

On a fossil grid, running carbon removal is self-defeating. On an abundant clean grid, it becomes a legitimate tool — clean energy spent to reverse damage rather than to cause it. The vision includes this drawdown phase, not as fusion’s achievement alone but as something abundant firm power makes feasible.

Where the energy goes

Discipline about claims

Carbon drawdown at planetary scale is an enormous undertaking and Kronos claims no special role in the capture technology itself. The honest statement is narrow: removal is bounded by clean energy supply, and firm clean generation raises that bound. Whether and how fast humanity uses the headroom is a societal choice, not a technical guarantee.

The machines remain simulation studies; the drawdown era is a later chapter of the same story. Continue to the healed planet and industry without smoke.
