Most urban air pollution is combustion; replacing the burning with clean electricity clears the air people breathe every day.
Vision, not specification. This page describes a future that fusion could help make possible — not a product promise, forecast, or performance claim. The Kronos machines today are design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated; construction of the first breeder is planned to begin in Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind first tritium targeted around 2030.
The air is made of choices
Smog, soot, and the fine particulate that shortens millions of lives each year are not natural facts. They are the exhaust of burning things — fuel in engines, gas in boilers, coal and gas in power plants. Every one of those combustion sources has a clean electric alternative, and the barrier to switching has been the supply of clean, firm, affordable electricity.
In the vision, cities run on that supply. Vehicles are electric, buildings are heated with clean electricity, and the power itself carries no smokestack. The immediate reward is not abstract: it is air that is safe to breathe, skies that are clear, and a measurable fall in respiratory and cardiovascular disease.
Quiet as a bonus
Electrification changes more than the air. Combustion engines are loud; electric drivetrains and clean generation are not. A city that stops burning is also a city that stops roaring — calmer streets are part of the same shift, at no extra effort.
