Reducing the Attack Surface of Power
On-site generation removes the fuel convoy and grid tie as attack surfaces, while adding a fixed installation and a fuel chain that must be defended.
What an attack surface is
The attack surface of a power system is everything an adversary can target to deny power: the grid, fuel convoys, storage, the plant, controls, and supply chains. Reducing it means removing dependencies an adversary can exploit — and honestly accounting for the new ones any change introduces.
What on-site fusion removes
- The commercial grid as a shared, external dependency.
- The continuous fuel convoy as a repeatedly targetable movement.
- Large forward fuel storage as a fixed target.
What it adds
- A fixed, locatable generating installation to defend.
- A helium-3 supply and refuelling chain to secure.
- A cyber-physical control system to protect.
The net effect is favourable but not absolute: the largest, most frequently exposed surfaces (grid, convoy) shrink, while the added surfaces (fixed plant, small fuel chain, controls) are fewer, more concentrated, and easier to harden and defend. Reducing the attack surface is a real benefit of sovereign power, stated with its trade-offs rather than as an unqualified win.
