Grid Independence from Commercial Utility
A sovereign installation does not depend on a commercial utility grid, removing a shared vulnerability that off-base power represents.
The vulnerability of grid dependence
Many fixed installations draw primary power from the surrounding commercial grid. That grid is outside the installation's control: it can fail from storms, faults, or attack, and it is a dependency the adversary can target without ever reaching the base. Grid independence removes that shared vulnerability.
Independence, not isolation
Independence does not require severing the grid tie. A well-designed installation can keep a grid connection as one option while being fully able to island. When the grid is healthy, the tie can supplement or export; when it fails, the base carries itself. The distinction is that the mission never depends on the external grid.

The role of the fusion unit
A base-load fusion unit is what makes independence practical without a continuous fuel convoy. But independence is still a system property: with burner availability at 0.86–0.995, the islanded base needs storage and redundant generation so that being off the grid does not mean being at the mercy of a single machine. Independence from the utility is real; independence from good engineering is not.
