When supply routes are actively threatened, the ability to generate power on-site becomes a survivability advantage, not merely a convenience.
When the tail is under attack
In a contested logistics environment, resupply routes are actively interdicted. Convoys are targeted; forward fuel storage is struck; delivery becomes intermittent and dangerous. Power that depends on continuous delivery becomes a liability in exactly the conditions where the mission most needs it.
The decoupling advantage
On-site generation decouples mission power from the contested route. If the base makes its own electricity for long intervals, an interrupted convoy no longer means an interrupted mission. This is the survivability core of the sovereign-power argument.
- Power availability no longer tracks route status.
- The adversary loses the fuel convoy as a leverage point.
- Fewer, less frequent movements are easier to protect.
Residual dependencies remain
Decoupling is partial. The burner still needs helium-3 (~400× domestic supply per unit, gated on breeder-bred and lunar sources), spares, and maintenance access — and in a contested environment those too can be threatened. The honest claim is that on-site fusion shifts the burden from a large, frequent, bulk-fuel tail to a small, infrequent, high-value one, improving survivability without eliminating logistics.
Decoupling under fire
When routes are actively interdicted, decoupling mission power from the route is a survivability advantage rather than a convenience. On-site generation removes the convoy as a leverage point, though residual dependencies — helium-3, spares, maintenance access — can themselves be threatened and must be secured. The gain is a change in the shape and frequency of what must be protected.
