What FOAK Does Not Prove
The first-of-a-kind unit proves gain and first tritium; it does not prove net electricity, fleet reproducibility, or burner physics.
Bounding the claim
Being explicit about what a demonstration does not show is as important as stating what it does. The first-of-a-kind (FOAK) breeder is designed to prove fusion gain and the foundry function through first tritium. Several things it will not prove, and the program does not claim it will.
What FOAK does not demonstrate
- Net electricity: the breeder does not target net electric output at all
- Fleet reproducibility: repeatable build and high availability are NOAK and BOAK work
- Long-term component life: full-life neutron fluence on the centerpost accrues over years
- Burner physics: the D-3He burner is a separate machine and program
Why say this
Overclaiming from a first demonstration is a recurring failure mode in fusion. A machine that reaches gain and breeds tritium is a genuine achievement, and it is enough for the foundry mission. Stretching it into claims about net power or fleet economics would be dishonest and is refused.
What is proven, precisely
FOAK proves that the design point, validated at G1, G2, and G3, produces neutrons, breeds tritium, and yields the product stream. That is the claim, bounded and reported against pre-registered predictions, no more and no less.
FOAK is a machine not yet built. This page states, in advance, the limits of what its eventual success will and will not establish.
