When blanket lithium absorbs a neutron and breeds tritium, the lithium atom is consumed in that specific reaction, but the surrounding lithium inventory remains and can be reprocessed. Blanket materials are managed so that lithium is recovered, re-enriched if needed, and returned to service rather than discarded after a single pass.
Why recycling keeps demand low
Because the lithium is recovered rather than consumed wholesale, the standing inventory turns over slowly and the makeup demand is small. This keeps the fuel cycle's only mined input modest and reinforces that lithium does not reintroduce a large extractive footprint.
