Energy Security Through Abundance

When fuel is universally available and bred on site, energy security shifts from controlling supply to building capacity.

Two models of security

Traditional energy security means securing access to a scarce resource: diversifying suppliers, stockpiling reserves, and protecting supply routes. Fusion offers a different model. If the fuel is drawn from local water and bred in the plant, security comes from having built the plant, not from access to a distant deposit.

Resilience properties

A fuel that every nation can obtain locally is resilient against the disruptions that affect concentrated supplies: embargoes, blockades, price shocks tied to a single region, and the loss of a critical facility. The small mass of fuel involved also means that even modest domestic stockpiles cover long operating periods.

A complement to firm clean power

Reserves measured in years, not days

Because the fuel mass is so small, even a modest on-site stockpile represents a very long operating reserve, far beyond the days-to-weeks buffers typical of fuel-hungry plants. A nation can hold a strategic fuel reserve in a space that would be trivial by conventional standards. Resilience thus comes almost for free from the extraordinary energy density of the fuel.
