Siting In Arid Regions
Because MetroVolt needs almost no cooling water, it can be sited in deserts and inland basins where thermal plants cannot secure a water supply.
Water as a siting constraint
For a thermal plant, the first question is often "where is the water?" A large, reliable cooling-water source, a river, lake, coast, or aquifer, dictates where the plant can be built. In arid regions such sources are scarce, contested, or legally allocated, which rules out or delays new thermal capacity.
How MetroVolt relaxes the constraint
- No steam cycle means no bulk cooling-water requirement
- Residual heat rejects to air, which is available anywhere
- Siting can follow load, land, and grid access instead of water
Why this opens new geography
Data-center developers increasingly seek arid, inland sites for land availability and climate, then struggle to find water for cooling and for the power plants that feed them. MetroVolt removes the generation-side water requirement, letting firm power be placed where the land and load are, not only where the water is.
A fair boundary
MetroVolt does not eliminate all water use at a site, and it does not remove the need for ordinary facility and construction water. Nor is it built yet; it is a design-stage study with a test unit planned around 2032. The specific, defensible claim is that generation-side cooling water, the constraint that most limits arid siting, is essentially removed.
