Supply-Chain Resilience for Tritium

Resilience means a tritium supply that survives the loss of any single facility, feedstock, or transport link without letting inventory fall below requirement.

Single points of failure

A supply chain is only as resilient as its most concentrated dependency. For a decaying isotope, a disruption is doubly damaging: production stops while decay continues, so inventory falls during exactly the window when make-up is unavailable. Resilience planning identifies single points of failure and adds independent alternatives.

Adding independent routes

A domestic fusion breeding route, as studied for the breeder, adds a production pathway that does not share facilities or feed streams with reactor irradiation. Two independent routes mean the loss of one does not halt make-up supply — the inventory keeps being replenished while the other route recovers.

The quiet chokepoints

Resilience analysis often finds that the vulnerable link is not production but the steps around it: preparation of feedstock, the single processing line that every route funnels through, or the specialized transport that moves the material safely. Hardening only the most visible stage leaves those quieter chokepoints intact. A credible resilience posture therefore diversifies feedstock and processing, not just the final production step, and protects transport and handling as first-class parts of the chain. The breeder adds an independent production route; realizing full resilience also means independence in the links on either side of it.

The strategic value of the breeder in this picture is diversity: it is studied as an additional domestic route, not a claim that any single facility is sufficient. Until FOAK, its contribution is a design target rather than delivered capacity.

Honest gateThe breeder (Hyperion) is a design and simulation study. Construction begins Q2 2027; first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium is targeted for ~2030. No hardware net-gain or delivered-isotope claim is made before FOAK.
