Domestic Helium-3 Production Security

A domestic helium-3 stream reduces dependence on incidental or external supply for detection, screening, and research needs.

The security case

Helium-3 supply has historically been incidental and concentrated, making it vulnerable to shifts in tritium inventories and to external supply decisions. A deliberate domestic co-production stream, as studied for the breeder, converts an incidental supply into a planned one under sovereign control — the essence of supply security for a scarce isotope.

Honest scope

Domestic co-production strengthens supply security; it does not claim to meet all national demand from a single source. The breeder's ~1.97 kg/yr helium-3 class is one contribution to a market defined by scarcity, and it is a design-stage target until FOAK operation delivers measured output.

From incidental to intentional

The security gain from domestic co-production is qualitative as much as quantitative: it changes helium-3 from an incidental output that markets happened to yield into an intentional product under national control. That shift matters because incidental and concentrated supply is exactly the kind that external decisions or inventory changes can disrupt. A deliberate domestic stream cannot alone meet all national demand for a scarce isotope, but it converts part of the supply into something planned and sovereign, which is the essence of security for a material the usual production levers cannot expand. Predictability and national control, not volume alone, are what that shift delivers.

The strategic value lies in adding a controllable, domestic option to a supply that has been neither.
