Co-production, by design

Most helium-3 has been an incidental by-product of tritium aging. The breeder (Hyperion) treats it as a planned co-product: operating a tritium-breeding platform generates helium-3 both directly and through the decay of the tritium it produces and stores. The design set places this co-production on the order of ~1.97 kg/yr.

Why deliberate supply matters

Because helium-3 arrives at the pace of decay, incidental supply is inelastic. A platform designed to produce and hold tritium creates a steadier, controllable helium-3 stream — deliberate supply rather than whatever the existing inventory happens to shed. For detection users, that predictability is as valuable as the quantity.

Honest framing

The ~1.97 kg/yr figure is a computed co-production target for a machine that is not yet built. It is meaningful as a design commitment and as a supply-security contribution, not as delivered volume. First helium-3 follows the breeder's FOAK schedule from ~2030.

Predictability has its own value

For users who plan detector procurement and sustainment years ahead, a predictable supply is nearly as valuable as a large one. Incidental helium-3 arrives at whatever rate existing inventories happen to shed, which is difficult to plan around. A deliberate co-production stream from an operating platform is steadier and can be scheduled, letting detection programs commit to fielding and maintenance timelines with more confidence. The breeder is studied to provide that kind of stream; its predictability, like its quantity, is a design intent to be validated once the machine operates.

Helium-3's strategic value here is availability for detection and research, distinct from any single application.
