No CO2 at the Point of Generation
Fusion releases energy by fusing nuclei, not by burning carbon; there is no carbon dioxide emitted where the power is made.
The defining environmental property of fusion is that it produces no carbon dioxide at the point of generation. Combustion sources — coal, gas, oil, biomass — release CO₂ because they oxidize carbon to extract energy. Fusion extracts energy from the nuclear binding of light isotopes; no carbon is oxidized, so no CO₂ leaves the plant during operation.
Why the mechanism matters
This is not an efficiency improvement or an add-on capture system; it is intrinsic to the physics. The breeder (Hyperion) fuses deuterium and tritium; the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) fuses deuterium and helium-3. Neither reaction has carbon in the fuel or the products. There is no flue gas, no smokestack, and nothing to capture at generation.
Generation versus lifecycle
“No CO₂ at generation” is a precise, defensible claim about operation. It is distinct from lifecycle emissions, which include building the plant, making its materials, and eventual decommissioning — a separate page covers that. Like wind, solar, hydro, and fission, fusion has low but non-zero lifecycle emissions. What all clean sources share, and combustion sources lack, is zero carbon where the energy is made.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.
This is one of fusion's most solid, defensible claims. It is stated precisely: zero carbon at generation, with lifecycle emissions handled honestly elsewhere.
